Can You Visit Boldt Castle in Winter?

Boldt Castle is closed from mid-October to May 8, 2027. Where to see it from shore in Alexandria Bay, why no boat lands in winter, and how to plan a 2027 visit.

Updated November 2026

A wooded island on a grey, misty St. Lawrence River in the off-season, when Boldt Castle and the 1000 Islands cruise boats are closed

No. Boldt Castle is closed to visitors from its October closing day until spring, so you cannot tour it in November, December, January, February, March or April. The castle stands on Heart Island in the St. Lawrence River, off Alexandria Bay, New York, and the island has no bridge: you reach it only by water, and the tour boats stop with the season.

What you can do in winter is look at it. From the public waterfront in Alexandria Bay you see the castle across the water, weather and footing permitting. You will not see the rooms, the gardens or the towers up close, and no regular sightseeing or stopover boat runs in midwinter.

The 2027 opening date is already published: according to the official Boldt Castle visitor information, the castle opens for 2027 on Saturday, May 8, and stays open until October 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. That is the castle’s opening day; a Canadian cruise may start earlier or later. For the stopover from Canada, the Gananoque: 1000 Islands Cruise & Optional Boldt Castle Entry (4.5★, 5,958 reviews, from $30) is the most reviewed cruise in the area; its five-hour option lands on Heart Island once the castle is open.

At a glance: Boldt Castle, winter 2026–27

  • Go inside the castle: no; it is closed until May 8, 2027.
  • Walk around Heart Island: no; island visits are seasonal and only possible by boat.
  • Take a winter boat to the castle: do not plan on one; tourist boats to the island run only in season.
  • See the castle from the mainland: yes, from the public waterfront in Alexandria Bay, New York, when it is safe to walk there.
  • See it from Kingston or Gananoque without a boat: not as a close-up; the castle sits off Alexandria Bay, across the border.
  • 2027 season: May 8 to October 11, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Best choice: a short stop in Alexandria Bay for a winter view, or a trip between May and early October if the castle itself is the point.

Checked on November 6, 2026. Hours, tours, border rules and winter access can change.

Is Boldt Castle open in November, December, January or February?

No. Boldt Castle is a seasonal attraction, not a museum that opens every day of the year. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority runs it, along with the Boldt Yacht House nearby, and welcomes visitors by boat during the warmer months.

The castle’s 2026 season ran from May 9 to October 12. The 2027 season starts on May 8. So a late-autumn or winter trip cannot include castle admission or a landing on Heart Island. Our guide to 1000 Islands cruises in winter covers the river as a whole; this page covers the castle.

MonthCan you go inside? What to plan instead
November 2026NoSee the outside from Alexandria Bay; expect many seasonal businesses in the village to be closed
December 2026NoA short waterfront look if it is safe, plus a separate indoor or dining plan
January 2027NoView the island from shore on a clear day; prepare for snow, ice and wind chill
February 2027NoWinter scenery from public access points; never try to cross the ice
March 2027NoPlan it as a winter trip, not an early castle visit
April 2027NoSome sightseeing boats in the region may start sailing, but passing the castle on a boat is not a castle visit
From May 8, 2027Yes, 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. until October 11Check admission and a boat that lands on Heart Island on your exact day

The castle’s virtual tour is a good way to see the rooms before you visit in person.

Why you can’t get to Heart Island in winter

Two separate things stop you.

First, Heart Island has no road bridge. The castle’s visitor information says you arrive by tour boat or private boat. Being in Alexandria Bay, on Wellesley Island or on the Canadian side of the river gives you no way to walk onto the property.

Second, the attraction itself is closed. Even with your own boat on a mild day with open water, the castle interiors, docks, ticket office, grounds and the border arrangements for visitors are not open.

Never walk, skate, snowmobile or drive across river ice to reach Heart Island. The St. Lawrence has strong currents and shipping channels, and the ice thickness changes from place to place, so it is not a safe shortcut to a closed attraction.

Can you see Boldt Castle in winter without a boat?

Yes, from the U.S. side. Alexandria Bay is the place to go for a winter view of the castle without a tour boat. Heart Island sits just offshore, and the village’s public waterfront looks out toward it.

Keep the two things apart: seeing the castle from a distance, and going onto its grounds. In winter, only the first is possible for an ordinary visitor.

1. Scenic View Park, Alexandria Bay

Good for: a simple panorama of the river, the islands and the castle.

Scenic View Park is a small waterfront park in Alexandria Bay with a beach and a pavilion. It faces the St. Lawrence toward Heart Island, and the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce recommends it for sunsets over Boldt Castle.

In summer it is a picnic spot. In winter you come for a few minutes at the lookout, the quiet river and a photograph. You may get snow on the roofs, bare trees and low winter light, but none of that is guaranteed.

Winter tips:

  • Check that the parking area and your way in are cleared before you set off.
  • Wear insulated boots with a good grip; paved paths can still be icy.
  • Bring binoculars or a zoom lens for the castle’s details.
  • Do not count on seasonal washrooms or other facilities.
  • Stay behind barriers and away from icy edges along the shore.

2. Alexandria Bay Riverwalk

Good for: a short walk with several angles on Heart Island.

The village’s riverfront walkway runs along the shore near the downtown streets and Scenic View Park. Walk it to find a frame for the castle that includes the water, the shoreline and the neighbouring islands.

In winter, treat it as an optional short walk; it may not be cleared along its whole length. A stretch that is pleasant on a dry day can be unsafe after freezing rain or heavy snow, and you do not need to walk all of it to see the castle.

If photographing the castle is the reason you came, combine the Riverwalk with Scenic View Park. They are close enough to see together without planning a long outing.

3. Casino Island footbridge

Good for: another view of the river, when the walkway is open and safe.

A footbridge connects Scenic View Park with Casino Island, a small island the local tourism office recommends as a spot to enjoy the St. Lawrence. Depending on where you stand and the visibility, the castle is in the view.

Check winter access on the spot before you cross. A path on a summer visitor map is not necessarily cleared or maintained in icy weather. If the bridge or path is closed, stay in the park and use the mainland lookout.

Which viewpoint to choose

ViewpointWhy goWinter caution
Scenic View ParkA simple river panorama with the castle in itParking, paths and facilities can be affected by snow and ice
Alexandria Bay RiverwalkSeveral angles on the castle from the shoreUse only sections that are clear and safe
Casino IslandOne more view of the river, across a footbridgeThe bridge or path may be closed; footing must be safe

With only 15 to 30 minutes, start at Scenic View Park. You will see the castle across the water, which is a different thing from walking around Heart Island.

Can you see Boldt Castle from Kingston, Gananoque or Rockport in winter?

This confuses many visitors staying on the Canadian side.

Kingston: a good base for its historic waterfront, downtown and the regular cruise season, but it is not opposite Boldt Castle. A January walk along the Kingston waterfront will not show you Heart Island. If you are coming for the city anyway, our December weekend in Kingston plan fills two winter days without a boat.

Gananoque: a summer cruise departure town, not a winter viewpoint for the castle. The island scenery in Gananoque cruise photos is seen from a boat, not from the town dock.

Ivy Lea and Rockport: closer to the central Thousand Islands than Kingston, and their summer cruise routes pass Boldt Castle. In winter the tourist boats are not running, and a Canadian marina or wharf will not give you a reliable view of the castle. Our winter guide’s FAQ on seeing the castle from the Canadian shore has the same answer.

Alexandria Bay, New York: the simple winter answer if you want to see Boldt Castle. You stay on the public U.S. mainland waterfront.

From Canada, reaching Alexandria Bay means crossing into the United States by road, and you must meet the entry rules for your nationality. The Thousand Islands Bridge is a border crossing like any other. Check the current rules with U.S. Customs and Border Protection before the trip.

If you prefer to stay in Ontario, our 1000 Islands winter guide lists the river views, trails and Kingston activities that work in winter.

Does any boat tour go to Boldt Castle in winter?

No regular sightseeing tour runs to Boldt Castle in December, January, February or March. The main sightseeing companies on both sides of the river run seasonal schedules.

Rockport Cruises says its 2026 season has closed and that it reopens in spring 2027. Kingston’s cruises sailed from April 18 to November 1 in 2026, and the last Ivy Lea departure was on November 3. The other operators publish their own seasonal schedules, none of them year-round.

Rockport, ONThe Rockport, ON: 1000 Islands /Boldt Castle Sightseeing Cruises (4.6★, 128 reviews, from $30), plus selected stopover tours2026 season closed; back in spring 2027

If you find a “Boldt Castle tour” online, select your travel date and read the route. A listing that stays online in January does not mean there is a January sailing.

For the whole river, read our guide to 1000 Islands cruises in winter.

When does Boldt Castle reopen in 2027?

On Saturday, May 8, 2027. The 2027 season runs to October 11, and the castle opens from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Early to mid May is a realistic first window for a visit to the island, provided a boat that lands there is running on your day.

Confirm three things before you pay for transport or a hotel:

  1. The castle’s opening: May 8, 2027, with the hours above.
  2. Your boat’s first sailing: a cruise company may start earlier or later than the castle, and some routes run only on selected days.
  3. Your entry to the U.S.: passengers coming from a Canadian dock need the right documents for a tour that lands on Heart Island.

In April 2027 a scenic cruise may pass the castle if its operator has already started the season. That still does not let you go ashore before May 8. Our best time for a 1000 Islands cruise guide compares the spring, summer and fall months.

Is the first weekend of May a good time to visit?

Not the first one. The first weekend of May 2027 is May 1–2, before the castle opens, so a trip to tour Boldt Castle on those dates would be too early. Saturday, May 8 is opening day.

If your dates are flexible, later in May gives the operators more time to publish their schedules. Check your chosen sailing and the castle’s hours either way, because not every service runs daily.

How to visit Boldt Castle once it opens

The best way depends on where you are staying.

From Alexandria Bay, New York

Good for: visitors already on the U.S. side who mainly want to see the castle.

Alexandria Bay is the closest mainland base. In season, Uncle Sam Boat Tours is one of the established companies running castle shuttles and sightseeing trips. Check its 2027 shuttle times and tickets before you arrive at the dock.

A simple plan: drive to Alexandria Bay, park where the signs allow, take a boat to the island and give yourself enough time on Heart Island for the castle and gardens. If you want to see the separate Boldt Yacht House as well, allow extra time and check its shuttle and admission.

From Gananoque, Ontario

Good for: travellers based in eastern Ontario who want a longer river cruise and an island visit in one outing.

City Cruises in Gananoque sells a five-hour Boldt Castle stopover cruise from its dock in town; on GetYourGuide it is the five-hour option of the Gananoque 1000 Islands cruise (4.5★, 5,958 reviews, from $30). The same company runs shorter sightseeing trips that do not land at the castle, so read the option name before you book.

The stopover enters the United States and includes a border check. The operator’s official FAQs list the documents it requires.

From Ivy Lea, Ontario

Good for: visitors who want to see Boldt Castle from the water without going inside.

The Ivy Lea Boldt Castle scenic cruise (4.6★, 1,552 reviews, from $30) runs for one or two hours, passes Heart Island and gives you views of the castle, but it does not stop there. It suits a short visit, or travellers who do not want to enter the United States. It does not include castle admission.

From Rockport, Ontario

Good for: choosing between a short castle-view cruise and a longer stopover.

Rockport Cruises runs non-stop cruises that pass Boldt Castle and selected four- and five-hour stopover tours that let you visit the island. On GetYourGuide, the Rockport Boldt Castle sightseeing cruises (4.6★, 128 reviews, from $30) cover the sightseeing routes. For 2027, check the length, the stopover details, the dates, the passport rules and the admission before you pay.

Our Boldt Castle boat tour comparison and Kingston vs Gananoque cruise guide compare every route.

Do you need a passport to see Boldt Castle?

Not to look at it from Alexandria Bay if you are already legally in the United States. Standing in a public U.S. park and looking across the river involves no visit to Heart Island.

A traveller driving from Canada to Alexandria Bay, though, must meet the normal U.S. entry requirements at the border. Seeing the castle from a park does not change the border rules.

For cruises leaving from Ontario:

  • Cruises that pass Boldt Castle without landing: the operators say you need no passport for the non-stop sightseeing cruise itself. That is different from crossing a land border on your own.
  • Cruises that land on Heart Island: you enter the United States. The operator and U.S. border officers require proper travel documents, and a visa or ESTA may also apply depending on your nationality.
  • Children: check the current rules with your boat operator and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, especially if family members hold different citizenships.

City Cruises and Rockport each publish passport rules for their stopover cruises; confirm them with the operator before you rely on a general checklist. Our passport guide for Boldt Castle tours has the details.

Is Boldt Castle worth seeing from shore in winter?

It can be, if you expect a view and nothing more.

You may get a quiet winter photograph of the island, especially with snow or frost on the shore. The castle’s towers rising above a wide river are an unusual sight, and in winter you share the waterfront with far fewer visitors than in summer.

A winter stop at a lookout does not let you:

  • See the furnished and restored rooms inside.
  • Explore the gardens, Alster Tower and the Power House up close.
  • Walk around the estate or visit the Yacht House.
  • Learn the island’s story from the exhibits and staff on site.
  • Combine admission with a castle-stopover cruise.

If the castle itself is why you are travelling a long way, wait for the season: May 8 to October 11, 2027. If you are already in Alexandria Bay for a winter weekend, a short stop on a good day is a pleasant extra.

When to take winter photos

There is no single best hour, because cloud, snow, wind and river mist all change the view. A few practical ideas:

  • Clear late morning or early afternoon: easiest for most visitors, because winter days are short and the sun stays low.
  • Late-day light: can be beautiful, but leave time to get back to your car before paths freeze or the light goes.
  • After snowfall: pretty scenery, but go only if roads and paths are safe.
  • Binoculars or a zoom lens: you see far more of the architecture than with a phone’s wide-angle camera.

Do not fly a drone near the island without knowing the U.S. airspace and site rules. A photo from public land is simpler and safer.

What else to do near Boldt Castle in winter

With the castle closed, plan a visit around scenery and activities that do not need a tour boat or a summer attraction.

Take a waterfront walk in Alexandria Bay

Make the castle view one short part of a visit to the village. Check which shops, restaurants and cafés are open before you travel; many tourist businesses cut their hours or close outside the season.

Try winter trails on the U.S. side

The Alexandria Bay Chamber’s winter page suggests snowshoeing and cross-country skiing near the village, including trails at the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center.

Wellesley Island State Park, which holds the nature center, is open year-round and lists snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The nature center’s off-season days vary, so call (315) 482-2722, and check the park’s advisories and trail conditions before you go. The park is not a way onto Heart Island.

Stay on the Canadian side for winter scenery

If you are staying in Kingston or Gananoque, you do not need to cross the border for a river walk. With a car, parts of the 1000 Islands Parkway give you river views, though you should check the road and the safe places to park in winter. Our 1000 Islands winter guide covers the Parkway, the Jones Creek trails and the Wolfe Island ferry, and our Kingston in December itinerary plans a city weekend around the holiday events.

A short winter plan: Boldt Castle views without a boat

This is a short outdoor plan for someone already in Alexandria Bay, or driving there in suitable weather. It assumes no paid attraction is open.

Approximate timePlanWhat to check
10:30 a.m.Arrive in Alexandria Bay and find legal parkingRoad and parking conditions; winter restrictions
10:45 a.m.Walk to Scenic View Park for a first view of Heart IslandFooting, visibility and wind chill
11:15 a.m.Walk a safe, open section of the RiverwalkSnow clearing and the state of the path
11:45 a.m.Lunch or a hot drink at a business you know is openWinter hours
12:45 p.m.A winter trail, or head homeTrail status, daylight left and driving conditions

If it is icy, snowy or very windy, skip the waterfront walk. You lose nothing by postponing a viewpoint, because there is no castle ticket to waste.

Common mistakes when planning a winter visit

Taking an online ticket listing as proof the castle is open

A ticket page can stay online all winter. What you can book depends on the date you pick and the castle’s season, not on whether the page is live.

Mixing up Boldt Castle and the Thousand Islands Bridge

The bridge is a road crossing between Canada and the United States. It does not lead to Heart Island, and driving across it will not take you to the castle entrance.

Booking a sightseeing cruise when you want to go inside

Some cruises pass Heart Island; others stop there. That matters in summer too. The Ivy Lea route, for example, gives castle views but no landing and no admission.

Expecting the Canadian shore to have the Alexandria Bay view

Kingston, Gananoque, Rockport and Alexandria Bay are different places. The close-up view from land in winter is on the New York side of the river.

Underestimating winter conditions

A cold, windy lookout on the river is very different from a sheltered town centre. Check the weather, daylight, road conditions and local closures, and never go out on the river ice to get closer to the castle.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tour Boldt Castle in December 2026?

No. Boldt Castle is closed in winter. If the weather and footing are safe, you can see the outside from the public waterfront in Alexandria Bay, New York.

Is Boldt Castle open in January or February 2027?

No. Both months fall outside the castle's season, and there is no winter tour of the rooms or the Heart Island grounds.

Can I visit Boldt Castle in March 2027?

No. March is before the castle opens on May 8, 2027. Plan a look from the riverside instead of a visit.

Is Boldt Castle open in April 2027?

No. Some sightseeing cruises in the region may start in April, but passing the castle on a boat is not the same as landing on Heart Island, which you can do from May 8.

When does Boldt Castle open in 2027?

On Saturday, May 8, 2027, according to the castle's official visitor information. The season runs to October 11, with hours of 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Confirm a boat that lands on the island on your day before you travel.

Can you drive to Boldt Castle?

No. The castle is on Heart Island, which has no road connection. You can drive to Alexandria Bay and see it from the village, but you need a boat to visit the island during the season.

Can you walk across the frozen river to Boldt Castle?

No, and do not try. Ice on the St. Lawrence varies a great deal from place to place, and the castle is closed in winter whatever the ice is like.

Can you see Boldt Castle from Alexandria Bay in winter?

Yes. Look from the public waterfront, especially Scenic View Park and any safe, open section of the Riverwalk, subject to weather and temporary closures.

Can you see Boldt Castle from Gananoque in winter?

Not as a close-up view from shore. Gananoque is a Canadian cruise town, and Boldt Castle sits off Alexandria Bay on the U.S. side. In season, some Gananoque cruises pass Heart Island.

Is there a ferry from Alexandria Bay to Boldt Castle in winter?

No scheduled tourist boat or shuttle runs to the castle in winter. The seasonal boats come back for the castle's opening; check each company's 2027 timetable.

Do you need a passport to view Boldt Castle from shore?

If you are already in the United States, no castle rule asks for one just to look from a public park. If you drive from Canada to New York, the normal U.S. entry rules apply at the border. A cruise that lands on Heart Island has its own document requirements.

Is Boldt Castle the same as Singer Castle?

No. Boldt Castle is on Heart Island, off Alexandria Bay. Singer Castle is on Dark Island, farther along the St. Lawrence. Both are seasonal, and a cruise that shows you one does not necessarily visit the other or include admission.

What is the best month to visit Boldt Castle?

June to September gives you the widest choice of island cruises and services. May is quieter after the castle opens, and October brings fall colour with a shorter remaining season. If you want the castle open, choose a date between May 8 and October 11, 2027 and confirm a boat that lands there.

Visit in winter or wait until May?

Go in winter if a quiet view of Boldt Castle across the St. Lawrence is enough for you. Scenic View Park and the Alexandria Bay waterfront let you see the castle without going onto Heart Island. Keep the stop short, check conditions first and do not expect the summer tourist programme.

Wait until May 8, 2027 or later if you want to go inside. Book a boat route that lands at the castle, check your border documents if you are coming from Canada, and give yourself time on the island instead of only seeing it from the water.

Continue with our Boldt Castle boat tour comparison and the best time for a 1000 Islands cruise, and check the 2027 departures before you book anything non-refundable.

Checked on November 6, 2026. Check 2027 hours, boat schedules and border rules with each operator before you travel.
