Gananoque vs Ivy Lea vs Kingston: Which Cruise Should You Book?

Comparing the three 1000 Islands cruise departure ports — Gananoque, Ivy Lea, and Kingston — on route, castle access, price, and convenience.

Updated August 2026

The short version: Gananoque is the only departure with close Boldt Castle access, while Kingston suits live entertainment and full meals onboard

Every 1000 Islands cruise on this site leaves from one of three ports — downtown Kingston, Gananoque, or Ivy Lea — and first-time visitors are often surprised how different the three actually are. They’re not interchangeable versions of the same cruise; each port has its own vessels, its own route through the islands, and in one case, its own passport requirement.

The short version

If you want the closest look at Boldt Castle, including the option to actually go ashore, Gananoque is the only choice. If you’re staying in downtown Kingston and want live entertainment or a full meal built into the cruise, Kingston departures make the most sense. If you want the shortest drive from the international bridge and a route that also passes Singer Castle, Ivy Lea is the pick.

Kingston: best for city-based travelers who want a full experience

Kingston’s cruises depart from downtown, right off Ontario Street, which makes them the obvious choice if you’re already staying in the city — no drive required. What sets Kingston apart is the onboard experience itself: the Island Queen and Island Star are larger, multi-deck vessels built for live musical entertainment and dining, which is why the lunch, brunch, and sunset dinner cruises are Kingston-based rather than running from the smaller island ports. All Kingston sightseeing routes run 3 hours and wind through the Admiralty Islands, passing landmarks like the Mandalay Mansion and Napoleon’s Hat.

The tradeoff: Kingston’s cruises don’t dock at either castle, and the plain sightseeing cruise starts noticeably higher ($51) than the equivalent 1-hour option from Gananoque or Ivy Lea, since it’s a longer, more elaborate route by default.

Gananoque: best for Boldt Castle access

Gananoque sits closer to the heart of the islands, and it’s the only departure port on this page with a cruise that actually stops at Boldt Castle. The 5-hour option includes castle admission and lets you walk the grounds and interior on a self-guided basis before reboarding. Gananoque also offers a cheaper 1-hour cruise (no castle views) and a 3-hour cruise that passes Boldt Castle and Millionaires’ Row from the water without stopping — so you can choose your depth of engagement with the castle without committing to the full 5 hours.

The one thing to plan around: because Heart Island (where Boldt Castle sits) is U.S. territory, the 5-hour cruise requires a valid passport or NEXUS card for every passenger, no exceptions. The 1- and 3-hour Gananoque cruises stay in Canadian waters and need no documents.

Ivy Lea: best for a short, scenic loop near the bridge

Ivy Lea’s port sits just off the 1000 Islands Parkway, close to the international bridge — convenient if you’re already driving that stretch of highway. Its cruises are the shortest on this page (1 or 2 hours) and the only routes that pass both Boldt Castle and Singer Castle, making the 2-hour “Two Castle” cruise a reasonable middle ground if you want to see both landmarks without Gananoque’s longer commitment. Like the Gananoque short cruises, Ivy Lea’s routes stay in Canadian waters, so no passport is required for either option.

How to decide

Start with one question: do you want to set foot on Boldt Castle, or just see it from the water? If yes, only Gananoque’s 5-hour cruise delivers that, and it’s worth planning your day around the passport requirement. If you’re happy viewing the castles from the deck, Ivy Lea’s 2-hour cruise covers both landmarks in the least time, and Gananoque’s 1- or 3-hour options are a reasonable middle path. If a meal and live entertainment matter more than castle proximity, Kingston’s cruises — especially the sunset dinner cruise — are built specifically for that.
